Reliable sources believe that Sony is very close to launching a Playstation 3 movie download store.
The Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal have reported that a spring update to the Playstation Network (Online part of the Playstation 3) will include a new design and a movie download store.
According to attendees of the "Destination Playstation" show (a retailer and publisher focused event), Sony showed off parts of the store to the crowd.
No doubt Sony will try to gain a market share from XBOX LIVE Marketplace and the iTunes Movie Store in the movie download business.

Wouldn't movie downloading hurt their own chances of people adopting the BD format? I realize they have to compete with Netflix and XBOX Live but this may decrease BD's lifespan!

I really don't see it hurting them.

It's a smart business move for Sony to have a downloading service. Who knows how long bluray will be around for but one thing is for sure, everyone seems to be heading towards download services. It would be smart for Sony to get themselves in the (movie download) game now before it's too late that way they have all the bases covered.

One main reason why download service will not take off
a) Resaleability (you cant take it to a shop for trade or resell
People like physical disks and when they are hardup for cash they sell there hard copy, can you do this with downloads ?

No, it wouldn't. This is just a way to cater to a different market segment. Downloading mostly appeals to people who want to rent a movie and like the convenience of doing it on the fly without having to step a foot outside their door. Sony is just trying to cover all angles and not lose out on easy money.

I think it will likely be a rental service just like on Xbox LIVE and iTunes. I love the XBL movie store.
