UPDATED: Spider-man 3 bundled with the console.

Sony introduces a new PlayStation 3 model with a 40-gigabyte hard drive for $399 in the US. The 40GB will be bundled with Spider-man 3 on Blu-ray. The 80GB PS3 model will also get a new price at $499 down from $599.

The model may come as a surprise since Sony pulled a similar low-end model of the market last year saying that consumers only wanted their high end model. However, Sony hopes they want it this time around. They need a boost in sales to close the gap between the PS3 and its competitors the Nintendo Wii and the XBOX 360. 404,000 Nintendo Wii's was sold in August in the U.S., or four million total since it was launched last holiday season. And 277,000 Xbox 360s in August, or 8.3 million since it went on sale two years ago, according to NPD. The PS3 sold only 131,000 units and has a total of 1.75 million in the US.

It is worth mentioning that the new model will NOT be compatible with Playstation 2 games.

The model is expected to street on November 2nd and will become the cheapest way to enjoy movies on Blu-ray so far.

Not bad if you want a gaming console, but if you just want a high def movie player you are still way better off buying an HD DVD player.

You know, I remember when game consoles were under $200, and now look at them! I don't care how good the graphics are, it's completely retarded to pay that kind of money for something that doesn't do anything but play movies and videogames. Spend $200 on top of the PS3 or 360 price, and you've got yourself a pretty nice PC WITH a Video card that can keep up with todays game graphics, plus be able to do everything you need to with a PC.

But, I guess consoles aren't aimed at the "common sense" crowd.
