"TOKYO — Sony said Monday that PlayStation 3 game machine sales totaled 1.2 million in North America during the key holiday season, boosting the strength of the company's Blu-ray video format because the console also works as a Blu-ray player," according to Associated press.

The holiday season goes from Nov. 23 to Dec. 31.

So Sony sold more Blu-ray players, not counting standalones, during this holiday season in North America than all types of HD DVD players sold by all companies since its release? And people wonder why Warner chose Blu-ray...

Sony sold 1.2 million PS3s during the holidays??? Well, that's not the case in the store where I work. Yes, they shipped about 6 PS3s, but we only sold 1. By comparison, we sold 6 XBOX360s and over 30 WIIs. Now, we're stuck with a lot of PS3s because nobody wants them. And I'm not even talking about the games...

PS3 may be a major succes in the hi-def field, but, in the gaming community, it's a major failure not seen since SEGA's Dreamcast.

I think that has a lot to do with the fact that The 360s launch year was a bit different from the PS3s launch year. Mainly because it launched before the competition and was thus competing with already established gaming platforms. Actually just one platform. The Ps2. I dont see the PS3 catching up with the 360 unless something insane happens. Like suddenly all xbox 360s explode when you turn them on. Worldwide the PS3 could possibly outsell the 360. I don't find that to be unlikely considering that Microsoft is still trying to gain a foothold in Japan. Which they are doing. The 360 has already well surpassed the Xbox sales, but its a slow process. I'm guessing that the next Xbox will be the one that will be serious competition for Sony and nintendo in Japan.

But how do you know that every single person who bought a PS3 wanted it for a BD player. Its possible there are people who wanted a PS3 for games, but still would rather HD DVD for movies.

Sony have basically taken that choice away from the consumer, and have used the statistics in their own favour.

Imagine if Microsoft or Toshiba started giving away free HD DVD players with every purchase of a computer... lets say around 1.2 million of them for arguments sake... nobody in their right mind would refuse one, and then they could argue that there are more HD DVD players than BD players.

Xbox360 has over 16 million sold (early holiday reports are putting it in the neighborhood of 17 million). The PS3 is sitting at 8.92 million units sold.

Am I missing something?
