Sony Electronics Switzerland is offering a mail-in rebate of 200 Swiss Francs (~$190) to HD DVD player owners.

The catch? Purchase either the Sony BDP-S300 or BDP-S500, send in proof of purchase of one of these players as well as an HD DVD player that was purchased before February 29 of this year, and you will be eligible to receive the credit.

Even better, consumers that take advantage of this offer will also receive both "Spider-Man" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogies on Blu-ray.

You can see the full offer here.

Just 5% of Europe's HDTV owners watch HD programming

So if they're not watching HD programming how were they selling all those bluray players in Europe when the format war was going on?

Ok, there's also this...

U.K. To Give Blu-ray a Big Boost

According to a new survey, 24 percent of residents of the U.K. say they will watch movies and TV shows distributed on Blu-ray discs over the next six months. By comparison 7 percent said that they would watch such programs downloaded or streamed over the Internet (2 percent said they would watch pirated versions). Of 1,608 adults surveyed, nearly 40 percent said that they currently own or have access to a high-definition TV set.

what a stupid offer. hd dvd players work just fine. meanwhile, the trade involves getting rid of a no-problem hd dvd player for a non-2.0 blu-ray player.

what the blu-ray camp should really offer are replacements for ALL non-2.0 machines when 2.0 machines hit the market.

It goes back to the premise that the average consumer does not know better. Sad.
