Sony revealed its numbers for the fiscal second quarter in Japan yesterday. The company in general showed a good second quarter due to a turnaround in its core business, LCD TVs, and other electronics.

Its computer division, however, still struggles to show good numbers. They have sold the Playstation 3 with a loss and sold less than expected. A quarterly loss of ¥96.7 billion ($845 million) showed they have a long way before they will make any money. The games unit, which recently announced a price cut for the PS3, won't be profitable until the next business year ending March 2009, it said.

The company also said that PlaySation 3 sales might fall slightly short of the target of 11 million this year to March.

This is news? Have they met ANY sales goals for the PS3 yet? Last holiday they sold less than half (I think?) of the consoles they said they would. that was a HUGE reason they got studios to be bluray exclusive. Now guess what? They're not going to meet sales figures again!?

Every gaming piece of hardware on the market is outselling the PS3...

The numbers for September:
XBOX 360, 527,800
Nintendo Wii, 501,000
Nintendo DS, 495,800
PlayStation Portable, 284,500
PlayStation 2, 215,000
PlayStation 3, 119,400
Game Boy Advance, 75,000

Even the PS2 is outselling the PS3 LOL. Sony is hard times. That ship is sinking fast.

Forget that one of its features is to play blu-ray and let's just focus on the fact that it's really meant for games. With that in mind, who in their right mind would pay over $500 for a game console that is hardly a worthy upgrade from the PS2? Honestly, Blu-ray has nothing to do with why the PS3 is a failure, it has to do with the unit itself as a gaming device. Gamers want things that are inovative and consistently changing, the PS3 offers very little in that department and is by no means worthy of the price they ask.

Absolutely. Plus!! The PS3 has been out for over a year and they still have zero games that are any good. They have a couple of sports games that are ok but NOTHING else. So they want people to buy the PS3 to watch bluray movies?? Aren't they screwing the companies that are releasing bluray players at much higher price points like Pioneer, Samsung, etc?

My brother bought the PS3 when it first came out and the thing has sat there since last Christmas and hes only used a few times. He got a couple of sports games and Lord of War on bluray which did not look any better than an upconverted DVD. He seriously hasn't touched it in months and only plays the XBOX 360 now.

Pretty much true. Although that one game for off-road vehicle racing - MOTORSTORM - is exciting and has some cool HD visuals in 720p. Still, Sony is really bummed in not having alot of premium game content ready for PS3, compared to the successful games on the rival XBox 360 and Wii systems.

Two things have made it hard for the Playstation 3.

1.) Blu-ray. Now, it is not the technology itself but the fact that it delayed the console at least 6-12 months. This gave XBOX a much needed head start which they have benifited hugely from. They now have the biggest install base for HD games in the US and it is hard to ignore a huge install base for 3rd part developers. To make things worse the Blu-ray drive also made a expensive unit even more so with $50 - 100.

2.) Third part developers. The Playstation 3 was not made with game makers in mind. Practically all that has developed for the unit say that it is hard, very hard. Developers tend to favor the bigger install base and easy and known development environments that are the XBOX 360. This ultimately results in the following. Later releases dates on the PS3 and games that does not look better because they originally was made with the XBOX in mind.

Also, since when does a gaming console come packaged with a movie?? They're packing Spiderman 3 with the newer PS3's. Doesn't that tell you that Sony thinks of this as a bluray player instead of a gaming machine?

I would be really pissed if I was Pioneer, Samsung and the other bluray player makers. Sony is screwing them bigtime.

I've always loved their TVs.. and the walkman was cool decades ago. I've never liked their game systems... and I certainly don't think being into it for $1000 to watch (1) movie is worth it... or paying more money per movie for less features.

Some of BR's 1st and 2nd gen player owners are finding out how important those updates are... that they can't download because they don't have ethernet ports.
