The Hollywood Reporter is citing "reliable industry sources" in their story that Toshiba is ready to throw in the towel and admit defeat in the Hi Def war. An interview with Toshiba's VP of marketing seems inconclusive, but said VP does admit that Toshiba is weighing it's options. Read the whole article here .
When it comes to the format war speculation always tends to run rampant, with both sides accusing each other of spreading rumors. Whether the story is true or not, it will certainly make excellent fodder for the message boards, so have at it!

I love Toshibas players and don't think they did enough to keep the format going. However, I cannot blame them for throwing in the towel when they are losing money on every player and it doesn't seem any change is in sight. I will continue to enjoy my xbox add on and HD-A30 with the discs I have and the ones that will be online cheap soon. It would have been nice if the movie studios had chosen the underdog who had its sh** together from the start but what can you do. Sudios are greedy.

this has to be the most low class report i have seen yet. I don't care how reliable the source is. If toshiba is dropping hd, i want to hear it from toshiba! I don't want to read a report they dropping hd and then read further that toshiba denies it. it's crap.

It's possible Toshiba will start selling blu-ray players soon:

If this is true, then again, my petition about Toshiba producing a dual player now makes sense. I would love for them to do this, and this would show that they respect all the HD DVD supporters.
Hey DJ, where you at dude, I think you were the one who said you had a buddy in California who said that they are developing a dual player?

I don't believe it until it comes from Toshiba. Didn't we just have an article a few days ago that Universal was going dual? What happened with that? Nothing.
It sounds like another spin from the Blu camp to discourage people from buying into the format and nothing more. Toshiba has no doubt heard about CH DVD, and if it really is compatible that's millions of new customers.

Hood I am only going by what the 2 articles said. They sound really reliable to me. In the article the VP of Toshiba said that something is brewing but not for another 2 weeks. So, I am just trying to keep upbeat if it happens. Let's just hope that if it does, Toshiba makes a dual player and not just a Blu stand alone player.
