Yabba Dabba Doo! - The misadventures of a modern stone-age family and friends...
THE FLINTSTONES: The Complete Series
After previously releasing individual single-season DVD sets, on October 28 Warner Brothers is offering the entire 166 episodes on 24 DVDs. Packaged in a unique gift box (see Cover Art images thru the link), the special edition set includes almost 5 hours of bonus features (not yet specified - SRP $129.98).
Created by Joseph Barbera and William Hanna, the series' four main characters (Fred and Wilma Flintstone, and Barney and Betty Rubble) were based on the four main characters from "The Honeymooners" (1955). William Hanna wanted to do a family-style series, but he and Joseph Barbera couldn't agree on the setting or the costuming. Suddenly Hanna exclaimed, "Let's do it in a caveman setting! They won't wear clothes, they'll just wear animal skins!" After that, everything fell into place.
This series was responsible for a number of American TV firsts. It was the first animated series in which a lead character became pregnant (and also show a couple sleeping in the same bed). It was also the first American animated series to feature a "story arc" - namely the numerous episodes regarding Wilma's ongoing pregnancy, followed by Pebbles's birth, followed by numerous episodes featuring Fred adjusting to his role as a new father. Prior to this arc, episodes of The Flintstones were interchangeable stand-alone stories.
In addition to the Complete Series box set, on December 2 Warner is also releasing the 1966 full-length animated movie THE MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE ($19.98) - "Fred finds he has a 'double' (superspy Rock Slag), and when the agent is injured, Fred takes his place fighting crime in the Flintstones' first theatrical film."
SERIES Synopsis:
Bedrock's most famous family as audiences first fell in love with them!
From the moment they arrived on the scene, The Flintstones lived up to the words of their immortal theme song: a modern stone age family that is a page right out of history. The lovable temperament of Fred Flintstone, the delicious digs of wife Wilma, the hilarious jabs of neighbor Barney Rubble.
Launched as an animated version of The Honeymooners, Hanna-Barbera's cartoon classic THE FLINTSTONES (1960-66) is family entertainment at its finest. From the town of Bedrock, modern Stone-Age couple Fred and Wilma Flintstone and their goofy best-friend neighbors Barney and Betty Rubble comically trudge through prehistoric daily lives populated by animals-cum-household-appliances with refreshingly sophisticated zaniness and humor.
Meanwhile, the Flintstones' affectionate pet dinosaur, Dino, and daughter, Pebbles--not to mention the Rubbles' club-wielding infant Bamm Bamm--cause plenty of havoc in a prehistoric world that's seen through a 1960s lens. This collection includes all 166 episodes of the animated sitcom's six seasons. Yabba dabba doo!
1966 FILM Synopsis:
Meet Fred Flintstone, super spy. He's the kind of guy who'd go down in history, except this is the Stone Age and history hasn't been invented yet. What, you don't know him? You will when you watch the feature-length cartoon spy spoof The Man Called Flintstone.
Our man from Bedrock takes on the mission of an injured super agent who looks exactly like Fred. His task: find the arch-baddie Green Goose and stop his world-domination plan. So, pretending to be on a modern Stone-Age family vacation with Wilma, Barney and Betty, Fred wings overseas to Eurock for some wild and woolly-mammoth intrigue. This is one spy caper that won't be finished 'til it's yabba-dabba-done!
