For many kids who grew up in the Fifties, Maleficent was Disney's most frightening villain. But she didn't start out that way. Early concept drawings show a much more benign villain with a more standard way of dressing. But once the design began to take final shape, character actress Eleanor Audley was called in to pose for artists.

There are plenty of concept drawings included on the Oct. 7 release of "Sleeping Beauty" on a new remastered two-disc 50th Anniversary DVD (presented, finally, in full 2.55:1 aspect ratio) and a much-anticipated Blu-ray release.

You'd never know Audley was once one of the Andersons' neighbors on "Father Knows Best." The actress was best known for playing evil stepmother Lady Tremaine in "Cinderella" and, of course, Maleficent. Disney-lovers who've gone through the Haunted Mansion at both U.S. parks may also recognize her as the voice of Madame Leota.

The new "Sleeping Beauty" two-disc DVD and Blu-ray feature a bundle of bonus features that, among other things, show Audley at work as she poses and moves around wearing the Maleficent horns, robe, and cape.
