The Seventies is well known for its genres of B-Movies that are commonly known as exploitation films. One of the popular subtypes of exploitation films are the ´Women in Prison´ films. This trend carried into the early Eighties and saw such genre classics as "The Big Doll House," "Reform School Girls" and "Chained Heat." The general premise of these pictures were to place busty females into prisons, where they would be forced into nudity or devious sex acts and escape from cruel punishment. The women were not always attractive, and lesbianism is a popular thematic, but these prison films raked in quite a few dollars when they were popular. Notable directors like Jack Hill brought many of these films to the screen. However, a few even lower-budget films were produced to capitalize on the popularity of these films. Director Ted V. Mikels very low-budget contribution to this genre is "10 Violent Women."
Mikels picture begins with a group of women mining in a cave. The sole man in the operation accidentally sets off a few explosives and nearly kills one of the ten girls. He hasn´t been paid in months and decides to rip open one of the bustier girls´ tops. The remaining girls beat the poor man to a pulp and they decide that it is time to stop working hard making money and do it the easy way. They now become the ten violent women and plan a jewel heist to make their quick riches. The jewel heist leads them to deal with a buyer, Leo the Fence, (played by Mikels) and he lacks the cash to pay them for the jewels, but does so with drugs. They kill him with a high heel and set off to sell the drugs and make their riches. This leads to a shootout, where one of the girls are killed and some of the remaining girls are captured and sent to a prison.
Sam (Sherri Vernon) and Maggie (Dixie Lauren) quickly find their way to the attention of a lesbian warden (Georgia Morgan). The Warden loves to dress up in nightgowns and beat the women. The women have the opportunity to have sex with the warden in exchange for favors, but Sam and Maggie are against this behavior and they decide to escape. When they do escape, they recover a scarab that was stolen in the jewel heist. It had belonged to a rich Arab. Coincidence has them run into the Arab and he recognizes the scarab and decides the fate of Sam and Maggie.
For many, this is B-Movie bliss. The screenplay, acting and technical merits of the film is all bottom of the barrel. This is what makes many B-Movies great. You have those films that are good because they are good, and you have films that are so bad that they are good. This falls into the category of the latter. In now way, can "10 Violent Women" be considered a good film. It features a group of mostly unattractive women who lack any acting skills. Whenever an opportunity exists to show some tit, the film does so. ´Women in Prison´ films are all about T&A, and "10 Violent Women" does not excel in this regard, but contains enough to easily secure an R rating.
B-Movie junkies that have a soft spot for bad exploitation films will embrace "10 Violent Women." It would make a solid entry in any late Saturday night beer and movie gathering. The film is a harder edged version of what can be seen on "USA Up All Night" and is bad enough to be laughable, at least when viewing with a group of friends. There are countless numbers of better B-Movie films, and there are certainly better ´Women in Prison´ films. One or two of the women are not bad on the eyes, but most are. The actresses are of the one-off variety and there is a good reason they have never acted in another picture. If you are looking for bad, then you have found it with "10 Violent Women."
