Audio:
Likewise, the monaural sound is fairly average. It has a narrow frequency range and a fairly limited dynamic response. It serves its purpose and little more.
Extras:
There are, however, some additional materials on the disc to take our mind off such matters, starting with an excellent sixty-minute documentary called the "Ray Harryhausen Chronicles," a biographical look at the man who gave us so many memorable and imaginative sequences in sci-fi and fantasy films. His work in special effects has unquestionably influenced everyone in the motion picture industry. There are also two other, shorter documentaries, "A Look Behind the Voyage" and "Jason and the Argonauts," the latter the same one included on Columbia TriStar's DVD of "Jason and the Argonauts," an interview with Harryhausen conducted by John Landis. Language choices are English, Spanish, and Portuguese; subtitle choices are English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, and Thai. Are there really bigger markets for Portuguese and Thai than for French? I guess. An original theatrical poster, filmmaker biographies, scene selections, and trailers complete the list of extras.
Parting Thoughts:
I admit I may like "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" more than I should, having grown up with Ray Harryhausen's creations. While watching the Harryhausen documentary, I realized I had seen practically all of his films when they first opened in theaters. Today, a lot of adults have lost their sense of imagination, and an equal number of youngsters have never developed one. "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad," like "The 3 Worlds of Gulliver," "Mysterious Island," "Jason and the Argonauts," "Clash of the Titans," and a score of other Harryhausen projects, offers us the chance to exercise anew that sense of wonder we all had a long time ago.
