VIDEO:
The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen with an aspect ratio of 1.78:1. "Dr. Horrible" was shot in high definition digital and looks surprisingly crisp for what is basically a low-budget production. There are a couple quick shots where the picture looks flat, but overall it looks incredibly clean and bright.
AUDIO:
The audio is presented in both Dolby Digital 5.1 as well as Dolby Digital stereo. A most important element for a musical, the audio is robust though not window-shattering reference material. All the vocals and music sound great on this DVD.
EXTRAS:
For such a short production, the DVD is packed with quite a lot of extras. "Dr. Horrible" was previously released as an Amazon exclusive on DVD-R. The pressed DVD version has all the same extras.
Commentary! The Musical is a tongue-in-cheek musical commentary with the participants bursting into song. It´s a bit hit-and-miss with little repeat value though the highlights include a number about the writers´ strike and Nathan Fillion singing, "I´m Better Than Neil." The second commentary is a standard, non-singing track featuring the three leads and the creators. It´s a breezy track with everyone joking and reminiscing about the production. Despite having 7 folks chatting it up, it´s not too overstuffed.
The Making of Dr. Horrible´s Sing-Along Blog is a 20 minute making-of documentary broken into three chapters. "The Movie" is about the genesis of the project as well as the actual shoot. "The Music" is about how the creation of the songs with behind-the-scenes videos of the actors recording them at Joss´s home. The third chapter, "What Just Happened?," is about the positive fan reaction to the finished product.
Rounding out the extras are ELE Application Videos, a collection of videos made by fans as audition tapes for the Evil League of Evil, and the "Dr. Horrible" teaser trailer. There are also several Easter Eggs that include a blooper reel and interviews with the various members of the Evil League of Evil.
FILM VALUE:
Joss Whedon obviously subscribes to the age-old adage, "Leave your audience wanting more." "Buffy" and "Firefly" have been off the air for years and people are still asking for more stories from those universes. The same goes for "Dr. Horrible." Less than an hour of the good doctor was enough to whet the appetites of fanboys everywhere. A sequel is in the works though the creators have been mum about the specifics. "Dr. Horrible´s Sing-Along Blog" dares to be different and the risks pay off. This is a fun production full of originality, hilarity, and tunes that will worm their way into your ear and iPod. The series may still be available to watch on the internet for free, but real fans will want to pick up the DVD for its quality transfer and wealth of extras.
