Games Of Love And Chance (DVD)
APPROX. 117 MINS. - PROD. YEAR: 2003 - MPA RATING: NR
" Kechiche’s gamble on his amateur troupe pays off handsomely; the performances in this film are superior to 98% of the work ever produced by The Method.

"Games of Love and Chance" is less successful as political commentary: a clash with abusive police near the end feels forced and artificial, and the attempt to mirror the class-politics of the Marivaux play (the message of which is, in effect, "stick with your own kind") doesn´t quite gel. However, for its vivid performances and semi-verité attentiveness to detail, the film is quite satisfying.
Video
The film is presented in its original 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The transfer is respectable, though the color looks a bit drab (perhaps that´s the way it was shot).
Audio
The DVD is presented in Dolby Digital Stereo. English subtitles support the French audio.
Extras
Just two trailers, one English, one foreign.
Film Value
It´s easy to be distracted (even deafened) by the volleys of obscenities, but "Games of Love and Chance" is far more sensitive than its aggressive attitude would lead you to believe. Kechiche has a real knack for listening to his performers, and he coaxes splendid performances from them. "Games of Love and Chance" may not have been the greatest French film of the year, but the awards were more based on more than just liberal guilt.
