"Moonlight Mile" is a science fiction anime TV series originally released in the US by ADVFilms as 3 individual volumes back in 2008. The license for the show was then transferred to FUNimation in the summer of 2008 as part of a bundle of over 30 titles that they acquired from ADV. Now FUNImation has released the series in the US again, this time as a slim pack box set.
Saruwatari Goro and Jack "Lostman" Woodbridge are a pair of daredevil adventurers who live for challenging themselves to the limit. By the age of 22, they had conquered the 7 largest mountains in the world. While sitting at the top of Mount Everest, they wondered where they could possibly go from there. The answer was immediately obvious as they gazed at the sky: up.
The recent discovery of an almost limitless new energy source on the Moon has changed the face of Earth politics. This resource can provide enough electricity to last the Earth over 1000 years. The global fuel crisis is a thing of the past. In order to tap this amazing resource, the nations of the Earth have joined together to form an International Space Agency (ISA) which will draw from the space programs of all the member countries and send missions to the moon. A space outpost will be constructed there, and a series of fusion reactors will manage the energy and send it to the Earth.
Goro and Jack are determined to make it to the Moon somehow. However, they go about it in different ways.
Saruwatari Goro spends the next 5 years working for a large construction company. Refusing desk jobs, he steadfastly stays out in the field learning the construction trade and becoming an expert at a variety of vehicles, all of which will come in handy as the ISA works on building facilities on the moon. Goro is one of those hidden genius type of characters. His unshakable belief in himself inspires others to believe in him, too. He has a 6th sense that helps him pull through some amazing feats. You could say he leads a charmed life. If there is a crisis, Goro will always somehow find a way to get out of it and save the day.
Jack "Lostman" Woodbridge takes a different path. After Mount Everest, he joins the Navy and learns how to pilot jets. While his luck is made more through endurance, determination, and physical effort than solving puzzles, Lostman also experiences many unbelievable adventures and manages to make it through in one piece. Like Goro, he works toward being selected by the new International Space Agency to participate in their astronaut training program.
Will Goro and Lostman overcome the many obstacles in their way and make it to the Moon?
"Moonlight Mile" is a very macho series, almost like a soap opera for men. The heroes are manly men, with strong, muscular physiques, and confident, rough personalities. They drink a lot and are womanizers, eagerly sleeping with countless women. Yet they are also very smart, planning their various daring adventures with great care. They are both well-read and knowledgeable about more than you would expect by looking at them.
The art style of "Moonlight Mile" is on the realistic side, with very rugged features and barrel-like large muscular body types. This is set in the future, but it is more of a "hard" science fiction future, where all the devices and technology are based on vaguely real science. There are no giant robots shooting lasers or psychic pre-teen Gothic maids running around here.
