"Moonlight Mile" is a series for adults. This is rated MA for a reason. There is a lot of action, violence, profanity, nudity, and sex. Goro and Jack have no shortage of female conquests, and sometimes they indulge in their affairs in very inappropriate places. The women in this series are little more than background props to illustrate just how much testosterone our heroes are suffused with. Jack uses sex like a good luck charm, and Goro has a girl in every city. Instead of a monster of the episode like in many typical anime series, here we have the woman of the episode.

"Moonlight Mile – The Complete First Season" contains all 12 episodes spread across 2 discs. While overall I was amused by just how over-the-top manly this series is, and I appreciated the fact that this show uses a more realistic technology and space setting than a typical space anime, I was also disappointed. The premise for "Moonlight Mile" has a lot of potential, and I would have preferred to see it done in a less exaggerated way, with realistic and well developed characters instead of macho caricatures.

Video:
"Moonlight Mile" comes in a nice 16:9 wide screen presentation. The deep black of outer space are sufficiently deep black, and the contrasting whites of the space station and blue of the earth look great. There are no noticeable defects with the picture quality.

Audio:
Unlike most FUNimation releases, this set comes with great Dolby Digital 5.1 surround audio tracks for both the English and the Japanese dialog. This is a wonderful change of pace, no doubt due to the fact that this was originally an ADVFilms release. Usually FUNimation will only give the English track the full 5.1 treatment, leaving us with the Japanese audio in 2.0 stereo. I am happy to see we have 5.1 for both this time, and I wish FUNimation would consider using 5.1 for their Japanese audio tracks as well .

Extras:
"Moonlight Mile" contains no extras at all.

Miscellaneous
The set is packaged simply, with two slim keep cases each containing one disc. The cases fit snugly in a cardboard cover. Each of the slim cases is clear, allowing some artwork of space scenes on the reverse side of the covers to show through when the cases are opened.

Film Value:
This is just the first season of "Moonlight Mile." While I am unsure if the second season has been licensed for US release, I must say that it is hard to imagine these guys having further adventures more manly than the ones presented here. This is a tough guy show, where men drink hard, fight with their fists, and get by using their own willpower and sweat. If you are in the mood for some gritty space science fiction, without all that pesky stuff like realistic, well-developed characters, this is the show for you.
