A while back, I told a fellow DVD Town critic that I believed that "Excel Saga" would be the hardest series to adequately review. Today, I stand corrected. "Puni Puni Poemy" is the strangest and most entertaining series I have seen in quite a while. It has a level of weirdness that will be hard to put into words. I believe that the best way to sum up the two episode series, is that it was created by the makers of "Excel Saga" to push their limits. The story of the specifics on this are actually contained in the poster/insert of this DVD.

"Puni Puni Poemy" is the story of a magical girl, Poemy (AKA. Kobayashi). Kobayashi wants to become a voice actress more than anything. She must also save the world because, as it is explained, she is the world. Kobayashi is joined in this fight by her adoptive father (Nabeshin, the director), her adoptive mother (Miss Kumikumi), and the Aasu sisters. Futaba, the Aasu sister in Kobayashi's 4th grade class is deeply in love with Kobayashi. Nothing says wrong like ten-year-old lesbian girls getting it on in their classroom. This love sparks many awkward moments throughout the series, especially because Kobayashi is in love with another classmate, K. K is actually an alien bent on world domination for the purpose of making porn. At least, that's my take on it. He never actually mentions filming any of this.

The plot soon takes off, as the series is only two episodes. The dreaded "one-ball" alien descends upon the town and kills Kobayashi's family. With this, Kobayashi decides to move in with the Aasu sisters. It would be monotonous to go through each Aasu sister individually, so I will move on by saying that they represent the gamut of anime girl stereotypes (such as a cute kid, a big breasted woman with glasses, and a dominatrix). All the sisters have super powers that can only be used defensively. After extremely short deliberations, they accept Kobayashi. By short, I mean that the deliberations went by in a super fast mode and took little actual time. I had to put the DVD in slow motion to read the entire conversation.

This may seem like enough material for two or three episodes in a normal series. In "Puni Puni Poemy" we haven't even gone through the first episode yet. The plot gets ever more convoluted as the story progresses towards its ultimate climax. Not to spoil things, but this seems remarkably like the mega-happy ending in "Wayne's World". Everyone is peaceful and happy in the end. Also, all those who died come back to life. In Nabeshin's case, this is attributed to acupuncture. What can I say, he is the director after all. He can do anything.

"Puni Puni Poemy" sets the new standard for sick twisted anime comedy. It is something to aspire to. The plot is so complex, and goes so fast, that it is easy to overlook some of the more interesting points to the series. I recommend watching it once through normally, then going back with the slow motion option ready to catch those scenes where you lose track of what is being said. Believe me, it will happen. With as fast as Kobayashi speaks, it is very hard not to miss something.

Video:
The video aspect ratio is 1.33:1 (full-screen on 4:3 monitors). The video on "Puni Puni Poemy" is amazing. The color and detail used in this series really brings everything home. Everything is just as it should be. I can see why the animation schedule was delayed so much in this series. The animators really did take the extra time to get the visual aspect of this series right.
