Now, the intensity level begins to boil as our duo run to Hollywood in an attempt to sell their newly found coke to a big movie producer. Needless to say, the plot thickens a little more as the FBI gets involved, and as you can imagine, there is plenty of shooting, killing, chasing, and running around involved. The last half of the film becomes very relentless in its pace, but it never takes its focus away from our main characters. As the plot and sub plots thicken, they are all brought together for quite the slap-in-the-face ending! The characters and plot certainly drive this film to a level not seen in many films today. "True Romance" is a movie that takes itself seriously but at the same time doesn't forget to entertain. I remember the first time I saw "True Romance" was with my now ex-wife, and we both sat there after it was over and said, "Wow! What a cool movie that was!" Yes, folks, she was the one I married after one night of hot native sex! Maybe it goes to show you that true romance is only in the movies... Who knows?
Video:
It's a DVD! It's beautiful! The colors are rich, vivid, and warm with a slight hint of mint freshness. The picture was as sharp as could be expected with slight grain in darker areas. There were a few composite issues with darker colors, but it is still leaps and bounds above VHS. The movie is presented on a double-sided disc that contains a both a pan-and-scan version and a 2.40:1 version. My pick is the 2.40:1 because I don't want to miss anything! I wish all DVDs came in all formats; then, I could just cut and paste this part of the review into all my reviews...and the same thing goes for audio!
Audio:
It was loud and sometimes quiet...it's presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and gives you a fairly clean sound with some minor balance issues, but nothing too bad to inform the eleven o'clock news about. There are times when the action scenes could probably peel paint off the walls, but that's a test for another time. The audio comes in English and also contains subtitles in French, Spanish, and English. Of course, if you're deaf, then a review on sound quality means absolutely nothing to you.
Extras:
Not much for extras here. All you get is a trailer and the usual boring cast list. Of course, this is the Director's Cut of the film, so there is added footage of the film never seen in theaters. What that added footage is, I really don't know. To be quite honest, the only version I've ever seen of this movie is the Director's Cut. However, I hear there's a new version of this film that will contain a director's commentary and some behind-the-scenes footage. Well, if you're one who's into extras as I am, then wait till that edition comes out. Otherwise, the older edition of the film is certainly worthy enough for a purchase.
