Speaking of which, everything in the film even looks the same. The colors are the same, various shades of brown, the prisoners' uniforms are the same, and their facial appearance is the same, thanks to their shaved heads. To make matters worse, the filmmakers want to be sure that we won't find Ripley's looks any longer appealing, so Ripley shaves her head, too! It doesn't work. She's still attractive.

Video:
The screen size is a wide 2.15:1 ratio, and the image quality is excellent. It hasn't quite the crystalline properties of "Aliens," but it is very well defined, with no observable digital artifacts.

Audio:
The sound is also excellent, with decent bass and dynamics and a good rear-channel feed. Again, Dolby Digital is preferable to the default Dolby Surround in terms of clarity and tautness, but if you have DD 5.1 capability you'll have to remember to select it from the languages menu at startup. I forgot and was halfway through the picture before I noticed. It did give me a better chance to make comparisons, though.

Extras:
The further away from the first film we get, the fewer bonus items Fox include. Along with the motion picture is a featurette on the making of "Alien 3" that includes a good deal of material on the making of the previous films as well. And there are five trailers, one for each of the "Alien" movies and one for the "Alien" video game that appeared in the early nineties. English and French are the spoken language choices, and English and Spanish are the subtitle options.

Parting Shots:
"Alien 3" adds little beyond more blood and gore to mark its entry into the "Alien" canon. It is an insufferably dismal story of doom and gloom meant to close out the series forever. If you are truly an "Alien" fan, you will want to quit after "Aliens" and assume that Ripley and her friends make it back to Earth safely. Just pretend the last two sequels didn't happen.
