From Sony Pictures Home Entertainment comes volume 1 of "Blood+", an exciting, dramatic, and action-packed vampire adventure.
The scene is Okinawa City, Okinawa, Japan. The action centers around a cute high school girl named Saya Otonashi. She is an average girl. Well, as average as a girl without a past can be. Everything that happened prior to the previous year is a mystery to her. She doesn't remember her family, her home, or her history. Fortunately for Saya, she was adopted by the Miyagusuku family who care for her very much and treat her like she is one of their own. She is close to her brother Kai and father George in particular. Saya doesn't know how she lost her memories, but aside from periodic blood transfusions at the local hospital, she lives a normal life as best she can.
A recent string of murders around the US Kadena military base in Okinawa has left authorities frustrated, and tensions between the local police and the US military forces strained. None of this has any bearing on Saya until one fateful day when she returns to her school after hours to retrieve something she left behind. In the dark, quiet, school yard, she encounters a monster more horrible than anything she could have imagined. Just when it looks like Saya is done for, a mysterious stranger appears and encourages her to fight. He forces her to drink his blood and unlocks hidden powers within Saya. The truth of her bloody past begins to emerge.
With the monster defeated in a shocking and bloody fashion, things begin to move fast. Covert forces from within the US military begin to pursue Saya, and she finds herself caught up in a dangerous war against strange, bloodthirsty creatures. What are these creatures, and why is it that only Saya's blood can destroy them? What is this strange power sleeping inside of her?
The series follows Saya as she struggles to make sense of who— and what— she is. The fact that she is not the normal schoolgirl she had thought herself to be is troubling and traumatic, and she must gather her strength to find the right path to follow. Joining her on this quest is the stranger who helped her fight the monster. His name is Hagi, and he has been by her side longer than she realizes. Together they will face an enemy that is horrifyingly familiar. Also assisting Saya is David, an agent of a mysterious organization called Red Shield. Saya's brothers Kai and Riku are also caught up in the action.
"Blood+" Volume 1 contains episodes 1 through 5 of this 50-episode series. This is just the beginning of an adventure that is sure to have plenty of complicated twists and turns, if these first few episodes are anything to judge by. The pacing is tight, and each episode ends with a cliffhanger. Even though it was inspired by a previously released movie called "Blood: The Last Vampire," "Blood+" is nevertheless an excellent stand-alone TV series. It is not necessary to see that film to understand and enjoy this show. This series takes place over 30 years after the events of the film. The characters and situations are new, and the character designs are different. While there are some minor references to things that happened in the movie, enough flashbacks are provided to make things easy to follow.
