. Flavor Flav was looking forward to being roasted and takes it all in good sport.
Video:
Comedy Central and Paramount presents the "Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav" in full screen video. Its 1.33:1 format does not fill today´s widescreen televisions, but it is colorful and decently detailed. Shot for television, the Roast is not intended to be a visual tour de force, but I´ve seen more than a few films on DVD that looks far worse for the wear than Flavor Flav´s grill. The set looked quite good, and the detail of the stage came across nicely on the DVD. You could read the words engraved on Flav´s grill and make out some of the gemstones on his Crunk cup. You would never confuse this release with a high definition title, but it is far from disappointing and whenever Brigitte Nielsen is on screen, you would be wishing for less detail. Coloring is good, showing proper contrast and skin tones. The hues are vibrant. The source materials provided for the show´s DVD mastering, but the bonus materials look as if they were recorded with a low-grade home video camera.
Audio:
The audio for "Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav" is provided through a Dolby Digital Stereo soundtrack and only in the English language. I think it would have been funnier than hell to hear this show translated for either French or Spanish audiences, but only English is supported. A DJ does spin a little music during the show and it sounds just fine, but is limited because of it being a television show and also being provided in only English language. Flav´s "Wows" and "Yeahs" sound just fine and all of the jokes come across loud and clear regardless of how poor they are in taste. The "Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav" is not a large-budget Hollywood film. It is a television show with comedians telling jokes. It does not need an aggressive and powerful soundtrack and for that reason, the roast sounds just fine in basic stereo sound.
Extras:
About forty five minutes of bonus materials are provided with the DVD release of "Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav." The longest supplement is the Red Carpet Interviews (33:22) and finds comedian Vargas Mason dishing out questions to anybody that walks near him. Some of the questions and interviewees are entertaining, while others are not. It certainly cannot equal the feature presentation. Both the Backstage Pass Pre-Show (:52) and Backstage Pass Post-Show (1:01) shows brief clips of the Roasters before and after the show. The quick Flavor Flav Gives a Tour (:51) finds Flav in his trailer preparing for the Roast. Flav is an entertaining individual and this and the longer Flavor-Cam (6:17) are fun little vignettes. The "Flavor-Cam" features footage from a camera mounted on his clock and cameras surrounding the rapper as he makes his way through the crowd. He was very enthusiastic and looking forward to the Roast.
Closing Comments:
If you can handle the harsh language and brand of humor, then the "Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav" is a riot. I felt bad for poor Brigitte Nielsen, until she stood up to provide her own roasts. Her few minutes at the mic were the only real low point of the night, although Jimmy Kimmel pushes the envelope a little too hard at times. Flavor Flav was looking forward to being roasted and takes it all in good sport. He throws his own barbs back at the end of the show, but he didn´t quite stack up to most of the comedians. It was still a good time and this Roast had perhaps the strongest cast of Roasters since Comedy Central has taken the roast over from the Fryers´ Club. The DVD release is very run-of-the-mill and features a passable Full Frame transfer and stereo soundtrack. The bonus offerings are worth looking at once and the two featuring Flavor Flav were easily the more entertaining of the bonus offerings.
