Like good wine, “CSI” just gets better with each new season.

Video:
This is the area where the discs shine like a bright star. A flawless transfer plus beautifully saturated colors and natural skin tones make up gorgeous anamorphic images that measure 1.85:1 in a 16x9 widescreen display. Unless you own a HDTV, "CSI" has never looked so good. Close captioning is available in English.
Audio:
Making full use of the discrete English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, "CSI" offers an energetic front sound field while giving the surround channels a subtle but effective workout at the same time. The LFE is strong when appropriate and adds to the overall listening enjoyment. When it comes to TV shows that are transferred to DVD, "CSI" leads the way in taking full advantage of a digital soundtrack. Other language track includes Spanish Dolby Surround.
Extras:
I was a little disappointed by the amount of extra features on this Season 3 DVD set, which appears on Disc 6 and don´t seem to be as extensive or as interesting as the previous season´s. Starting off, we have "The CSI Tour: Police Station", in which Production Designer Richard Berg takes us through the various sets that make up the Las Vegas Police Department where Grissom´s team work their magic. You will see familiar settings like the interrogation room, the lobby, the labs, etc. In "The CSI Shot: Making It Real", the special effects shots unique to "CSI" are revealed. If you have ever puzzled over how the camera, for example, zooms into a cadaver´s body and show the effects of a gunshot, this feature is for you. Next we have "The Writers´ Room" where the writers for the show (who are also the producers) take us through the process of how they write the stories for "CSI". The main focus of this feature is the massive collaborative effort among all the writers to come up with stories for the extra long episode, "Lady Heather´s Box". The writers featured here include Carol Mendilsohn, Naren Shankar, Anthony E. Zuiker. Josh Berman and Sarah Goldfinger. The next feature is "CSI Moves Into Season 3", where the actors talk about the development of their characters in the third season. Season Two´s DVD release had a feature called "Tools of the Trade" which basically takes the audience through the various forensic equipment in the lab that are used on the show. For this season´s DVD release, the tools used in the field, instead of the lab, are detailed on "Crime Scene Field Kit".
Fans of audio commentaries will be in for a treat this time around. There are five, count them, five audio commentaries included in this Season Three DVD set (as opposed to none in the first season and three in the second). They are:
"Revenge Is Best Served Cold" – Danny Cannon & Anthony E. Zuiker
"The Accused Is Entitled" – Ann Donahue, Elizabeth Devine, Ken Fink
"Fight Night" – Richard Lewis, Naren Shankar
"Snuff" – Ann Donahue, Ken Fink
"Random Acts Of Violence" – Danny Cannon, Naren Shankar
"Lady Heather´s Box´ – Richard Lewis, Anthony E. Zuiker, Naren Shankar, Josh Berman
Fortunately, all of them are interesting to listen to, as all the commentators are very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the show. They share various tidbits of insider information that many of us, even the biggest fans, might never know.
Packaging:
Except for the cover art, the packaging for this DVD set is similar to the previous two season´s releases. A plastic slipcase encases a custom DVD package that houses all the six discs on green-colored trays that can be flipped over like the pages of a book. Two thin and transparent plastic pages serve to further protect the discs on the trays. A familiar yellow slip-off ring fashioned like a police "Do Not Cross" tape tops off the attractive packaging.
The Final Word:
Like good wine, "CSI" just gets better with each new season. Stories are never recycled and every episode opens with a fascinating crime scene for our heroes to tackle. One thing that sets "CSI" apart from the many crime dramas on television today is the clever use of what the producers call the "CSI Shot" to help illustrate how a crime is committed, even down to the molecular level. Pictures are worth a thousand words and this strategy works very well for "CSI" where some crimes can only be explained through technical forensic means.
For fans of the show, buying this DVD set is a no-brainer. For anyone else looking to get into the series, now is a time that is as good as any. Apart from "CSI"´s excellent and thrilling stories, Paramount has gone one step further by blessing this DVD release with a beautiful anamorphic video transfer and an active Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound that just makes the show so much easier on both the eyes and the ears.
