As befitting the Evil One, Pacino's character controls practically every illegal or immoral activity in the world; and he calls himself John Milton! Yes, named after THAT John Milton.

Video:
The DVD ran flawlessly from beginning to end. The widescreen image was as pristine and the colors as vibrant as any I have seen from a video disc.

Audio:
What's more, it has a sound track to match, one that never screams at its audience in brighter-than-needed decibels. Voices come across clearly and naturally, yet the music and surround effects are dynamic and wide ranging. Bass is prominent and firm but not overwhelming. Technically, this is one of the finest DVDs I have experienced, fully in line with other DVDTown Award winners.

Extras:
Finally, the "Special Edition" designation is one of the few early editions that lives up to its promise. There are as many features here as you will find on two or three other discs combined. Especially welcome were director Taylor Hackford's full-length film narration, and his insightful comments on almost forty minutes of scenes deleted from the final cut. One thing, though: The five theatrical trailers promised on the box are not all for the "The Devil's Advocate"; only one is. The others are for additional Warner titles in a similar vein, and they can only be accessed by going to the theatrical trailer section of the bonus material and pressing the forward button through each one.

Parting Thoughts:
Be aware that the film is rated R for nudity, sex, violence, and strong language. What serious film about the Devil's corruption could live without them? The film is frank and needs to be. It is a bold portrait of an amoral world. There are no heroes and few real villains. It is as good a film and as good a DVD production as I have seen in a long time. Credit where credit is due.
