The whole thing reminds me of when your friend would hog the game, refusing to let you have your turn.
The biggest draw the film has going for it is a set piece recreating the first person action of the original game. It was like watching Robert Montgomery's "Lady in the Lake" pumped up on steroids. I think the filmmakers overestimated its appeal. The whole thing reminds me of when your friend would hog the game, refusing to let you have your turn.
VIDEO:
The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen with an aspect ratio of 2:35.1. The picture quality is just about perfect. It all stands out really well, which is great since much of the film takes place in the dark.
AUDIO:
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 with three language tracks. English, Spanish, and French. As you'd expect, the movie is loud and you'll feel as if the bullets are whizzing right past you.
EXTRAS:
On this DVD, you'll find:
Basic Training, a featurette about military advisor, Tom McAdams, who trained the cast in weapons and tactics.
Rock Formation follows The Rock going through the make-up process.
Master Monster Makers is about the creation of all the ghouls and beasties featured in the film.
First Person Shooter Sequence gives us the lowdown on how the sequence was created. It's followed by the full section which was edited down for the theatrical release.
DOOM Nation is perhaps the most interesting of the extras. Talking head interviews give us a history of the game as well as people's first experiences with "Doom."
Game On! gives you helpful hints for playing "Doom 3."
If you own an X-Box, you can play a demo of the game as well. You'll also get previews for "Jarhead", "First Descent", and "Brick" when the DVD starts up. You can skip them though.
FILM VALUE
I spent many a late night sitting in a darkened dorm room playing these games, shouting obscenities at the guys across the hall. It was a lot of fun. "Doom" the movie? Not so much. Films like these usually cover up their shortcomings (i.e. a lousy script) with heavy doses of violence and gore. But, the action is completely pedestrian and unspectacular. At least with "Tomb Raider", I could stare at Angelina Jolie's inflated boobs. After finishing "Doom", I just feel like a boob.
