Bones: Season 2 (DVD)

APPROX. 917 MINS. - PROD. YEAR: 2006 - MPA RATING: NR

The two stars are engaging, with good chemistry, and the unique (albeit grisly) cases make for an entertaining enough diversion.

11) "Judas on a Pole"--Look for novelist Reichs in cameo in this episode that has Brennan suspecting her father may have been responsible for the gruesome death of a former FBI agent.

12) "The Man in the Cell"--Brennan's nemesis, serial killer Howard Epps, escapes from prison and torments her again with more clues to more gruesome corpses.

13) "The Girl in the Gator"--After Booth is sidelined with mandated therapy sessions, Brennan and a new partner investigate a college student who was killed on spring break.

14) "The Man in the Mansion"--Two of the Jeffersonian's benefactors are murdered, and Hudgins hides a personal connection to one victim. Brennan's budding romance with Agent Sully (Eddie McClintock) continues to flower.

15) "The Bodies in the Book"--Brennan suspects a copycat at work, but the jolt is that the case resembles one of her novels.

16) "The Boneless Bride in the River"--Yeah, can it get any more gruesome? While on vacation with Sully, Brennan gets involved with Chinese tradition and the death of a mail-order bride.

17) "The Priest in the Churchyard"--Brennan and Booth's banter turns to bickering, which hampers their ability to solve the case of a recent murdered corpse uncovered in a historical cemetery.

18) "The Killer in the Concrete"--Brennan's fugitive father turns up on the anniversary of her mother's death, offering help for her latest case, as Brennan tangles with the local mafia.

19) "Spaceman in a Crater"--This time it's an astronaut's death under mysterious circumstances; meanwhile, things get interesting between Hodgins and Angela.

20) "The Glowing Bones in the Old Stone House"--The duo investigates what turns out to be the stabbing death of a popular chef.

21) "Stargazer in a Puddle"--Brennan's father reveals a surprise from her past, while Hodgins and Angela go full speed ahead.

Video:
"Bones" Season Two is presented in 1.78:1, and while there's a slight amount of grain the picture is quite good for TV-on-DVD. The picture is stretched to fill out a 16x9 television screen.

Audio:
Audio options are English Dolby Digital 5.1 or Spanish Dolby Digital Surround, 3.0, with subtitles in English (CC), Spanish, or French. As with the video, the sound quality is pretty good, with no distortion or unwanted background noise and a nice rich timbre.

Extras:
There are two optional commentaries, curiously for the last two episodes. Deschanel, director Caleb Deschanel and executive producer Stephen Nathan offer their thoughts on "The Glowing Bones in the Old House," while Nathan, series creator Hart Hanson, and executive producer Barry Josephson handle the voiceover for "Stargazer in a Puddle." Both commentaries are pretty standard--nothing out of the ordinary.

Two short features ("Memories in the Season" and "Visceral Effects: The Digital Illusions of Bones") are also pretty standard, with the latter more appealing just because it's interesting to see what can substitute for human remains these days. Rounding out the extras are a handful of deleted scenes with optional commentary and a gag reel.

Bottom Line:
While some may think of "Bones" as a pale copy of "CSI," the two stars are engaging, with good chemistry, and the unique (albeit grisly) cases make for an entertaining enough diversion. The lighter tone is also a welcome palliative, though the romantic sideplots seem a little obvious.
