VIDEO:
The video is presented in the original fullscreen aspect ratio. The show probably looks better than it has in decades though it still shows its age. The picture is soft and the colors are pretty faded. There´s also some discoloration on the edges from time to time along with the occasional grain and dirt.
AUDIO:
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono. The sound is clean and the dialogue comes in clear.
EXTRAS:
SNL Mardi Gras Special is the only episode not shot in New York. It was broadcast from New Orleans during the Mardi Gras festivities. Guest host was Randy Newman with appearances by Eric Idle, Buck Henry, Henry Winkler, Cindy Williams, and Penny Marshall.
You´ll also get two audio recordings from the dress rehearsals featuring skits with Sissy Spacek and Lily Tomlin and a screentest with Andy Kaufman. Rounding out the extras are trailers for "30 Rock" and "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry."
The DVDs are housed in a foldout digipak which is inside a handsome hard cardboard case. The set comes with a booklet containing vintage photos.
FILM VALUE:
This second season set is like owning a little piece of history. You get a glimpse of one of television´s longest-running shows in its infancy and a look at today´s superstars long before anyone knew their names. You´ll also see the debuts of well-known recurring characters like the Coneheads ("Consume mass quantities!") and Nick the Lounge Singer. Universal has packaged these DVDs quite well and my only gripe is that there isn´t enough bonus material. They probably wouldn´t be able to get Murray, Chase or Aykroyd, but I still would have liked to see new interviews with some of the other cast members as well as Lorne Michaels.
