This particular video transfer has been around for several years now. It's beautiful to watch, especially on DVD, but several of the night scenes are too bright. For example, the scene where Natalie Wood as the now teenaged niece is removed from the Comanche encampment is supposed to occur about sun-up, but the video looks like broad daylight. The DVD video is generally excellent, but there's some pixelation along the edges of details like plaid shirts when they start to move. It has a clean, quiet monophonic soundtrack. The excerpts from Warner Bros. Presents are the same as have been used for the last few years in other home video releases of the film.
Wayne once called "The Searchers" his favorite movie. There may have been sentimental reasons for that. His and Ford's best friend, actor Harry Carey, had just died and both Carey's wife and son appear in this movie. Sentimental or not, Wayne could easily have been right. The Searchers deserves an honored place in every John Wayne or Western collection.
