corponok leads his army to the Minicon base on Mars and steal all their Energon. While this is happening, Optimus Prime is left with a tough decision: help the Minicon repel their attackers or leave Earth defenseless. The stolen Energon allows Scorponok to power up Megatron's Star Saber, giving him the edge in his next Energon raid and tempt the remaining Decepticons to his side.
The major change for this new series is the mixture of computer animation with tradition cel-animation. The human characters are hand drawn in the style of Japanese anime, while the Transformers are done with CGI. The result is less than spectacular because the Transformers move about awkwardly. A scene where they run is quite laughable and their transformation sequences look like they've skipped several in-between frames.
I also found the character of Kicker to be very unbearable. The show's creators probably intended him to be a fiery rebel, instead he comes off as an obnoxious whiner. He's always complaining about how the Autobots boss him around, how they doesn't like following orders, and how they wants to see more battle.
VIDEO:
The video is presented in fullscreen with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The picture looks great without any noticeable flaws. The colors are all vibrant and sharp.
AUDIO:
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo. The audio is crisp and clear, while the sound effects certainly stand out.
EXTRAS:
The only extras are a selection of previews for other Paramount releases including: "Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie" and the TV box sets, "Duelmasters", and "G.I. Joe: Valor vs. Venom." The previews play when you pop in the DVD. You can skip past them or hit fast forward, but you aren't able to jump directly to the main menu. Something I continually find to be quite annoying.
FILM VALUE:
I wasn't that enthusiastic about "Transformers: Armada", but I found they had some interesting new twists to the Transformers universe. "Transformers: Energon" is a big step back. The designs of the Transformers are even more clunky and the stories blur into a bunch of loud noises. Finally, Kicker reigns as the all-time most annoying sidekick, standing tall alongside the Wonder Twins (from "Superfriends"), Orko (from "Masters of the Universe"), and Snarf (from "Thundercats").
