The plot is kept moving in every episode. The Raalgan Empress relies more and more on Dom, one of her Naval commanders. For his part, Dom hears of the exploits of Captain Tylor and resolves to find out just who he is. Despite enjoying an overwhelming advantage against Tylor, Dom still loses in a battle against him, as does every other one of Tylor´s opponents. Which leads me to the greatest hook this show has. Is Tylor really an idiot? Or is he really some kind of genius just pretending to be an idiot for reasons that will be revealed later? Even his own crew can´t decide which to believe.
Video:
The video aspect ratio is 1.33:1 (full-screen on 4:3 monitors). The quality came out well on the disc, and I had nothing to complain about in terms of color or animation quality. There were one or two parts that seemed slightly jittery, mostly on pan-ins and pan-outs. However, they´re nothing that will stop you from enjoying the show.
Audio:
You can watch the show with either Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo Japanese or DD 2.0 stereo English. There is an option for English subtitles. I watched it in Japanese with English subtitles. Some of the music for the show is wimpy sounding, but the voice acting and sound effects are good. While there isn´t much use of channel separation, this is a TV show that´s about a decade old, so you can´t expect everything. I didn´t notice any problems with the audio quality.
Extras:
Unfortunately, there are few extras on this DVD. In the main menu, you get the bios of most of the main characters in the series.
In the Bonus menu, the first extra is "Gallery". It contains short clips from various parts of the series that appear to follow no particular order or theme.
Second, there´s a spot for "Weblinks". Third is the "Special Thanks", a gigantic list of people and the town and state they´re from, including the my university´s anime club vice president, James Black. I believe this is a list of the people who preordered the "Irresponsible Captain Tylor" DVDs, thereby making the project possible.
Finally, there´s the "Japanese Credits". The ending credits play with only the Japanese credits in English displayed.
--Miscellaneous--
The DVD doesn´t come with anything inside the case. In fact, the disc itself has little else but black text on it.
Film Value:
This show started out as a bit of a space opera, became a comedy, and has now somehow morphed into both, all centered around the question of who Tylor really is. I love this series and can´t wait to find out what happens next. I suppose my appreciation could be summed up best by the show itself, as at the end of every episode a single frame displays "Filming is Job 1! Working hard for those who demand the finest in image and sound." Indeed they did.
