Extras:
Each "Excel Saga" DVD contains a great variety of extras. While the clean opening and closing (the standard anime DVD extras) are included on the first disc, they do not repeat on each subsequent disc. I find this very profound. Each DVD has enough extras on its own, that it does not need to repeat the clean opening and closing on each disc. This feat deserves applause. Between the six DVDs in this set, there are thirty separate bonus materials, not including the AD Vid-Notes. Listing these would be both a tedium to write and read, so I will save you the time and simply say that each extra can be an interview, a TV spot, a game, or something completely unexpected.

The menus of the "Excel Saga" are extras in and of themselves. The majority of the menu options trigger a transitional piece of animation, while others contain commentary or interesting background scenes that are played out while the viewer struggles to make a choice. A few of the DVDs even contain an extra set of buttons that have to be searched out. These secret buttons trigger an event or animation sequence that would have been otherwise missed. One that I have found inverts the screen. It is hard to say how many such Easter eggs there are off-hand. I think I have seen all the little surprises, but I really don´t know for sure.

--Miscellaneous--
Each DVD comes with a single-page, colored insert with chapter listings on it; and all the DVDs are contained in a very sturdy and decorative box.

Film Value:
As mentioned previously, "Excel Saga" is a masterpiece of anime. The video and audio perfectly compliment the bizarre plot and story styling. This mixture creates a series that is both entertaining, and pleasing to the senses. This combination is hard to come by in any genre. "Excel Saga" is like no other series I have seen, it has no equal.

The content of the series is somewhat variable, depending upon the episode theme. However, the overall plot and characters are preserved to create a lasting experience. The final episode most certainly leaves the largest impression, and no review could be considered complete without touching on it at least briefly. The final episode "Excel Saga Goes too far" is very appropriately named. If you thought that the series was over the top before, this episode will make your head explode. In short, it is just wrong and so amazingly funny at the same time. I don´t really want to give all the details on this episode, but I will say that it contains many scenes not safe for children (As if this series was intended for small children in the first place). So, if you are not a small child, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of this series.
