"Crossing the Line" – Jason makes an attempt to play Quad Rugby as his suspicions grow about Tim and Lyla. Coach Taylor has more on his mind than football when he discovers Matt has asked Julie out on a date.

"Full Hearts" – Tim and Lyla find themselves ostracized when their affair comes to light. Matt and Julie go out on their first date while Smash continues his abuse of steroids.

-Disc 3-
" It´s Different for Girls" – In one of the better episodes, the female characters take the spotlight as Lyla continues to take abuse from her former friends and the relationship between Matt and Julie grows.

"Nevermind" – Matt is thrilled when his father returns home from Iraq, but is disillusioned when dad wants to put grandma in a home and move Matt to Oklahoma. Tim deals with his academic struggles by getting tutoring from Landry.

"What To Do While You´re Waiting" – The team anxiously await the results of another game that will decide whether or not they´ll make it into the playoffs. "Upping the Ante" – Playoffs are underway, but everyone has much more on their minds. Lyla struggles with her decision to marry Jason and Matt receives more attention than he can handle as star quarterback which puts on a strain on his relationship with Julie who becomes unlikely friends with Tyra. Meanwhile, Tim tries to reconnect with his estranged father.

-Disc 4-

"I Think We Should Have Sex" – Matt is shocked when Julie tells him she´s ready to consummate their relationship. Tim´s reunion with his father is cut short when he discovers what kind of man he really is.

"Extended Families" – When Buddy´s affair comes out, it affects several people as Buddy crashes at the Taylors, Julie & Tyra deal with Tyra´s mother, and Lyla tries to find comfort with Jason in Austin as he tries out for Quad Rugby.

-Disc 5-
"Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes" – The calm before the storm, the Panthers prepare for the semi-finals and Matt receives quarterbacking tips from Jason. Lyla finds out more about her father´s past indiscretions and the Taylors tender the possibility of moving to Austin.

"Mud Bowl" – The school is closed down when a nearby train crashes and causes a chemical spill. Coach Taylor tries to find a new suitable field to play on and Landry is shocked when Tyra actually agrees to go on a date with him.

"Best Laid Plans" – Coach Taylor is courted for a job at Texas Methodist University while Landry struggles with the knowledge that Tyra was assaulted.

"State" – It seems the entire town is headed for Dallas for the state championships as the Panthers face off against a team led by their short-lived quarterback, Voodoo Tatum.

VIDEO:
The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen with an aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The transfer is exceptionally clean without any noticeable blemishes. The show has a bit of a documentary look to it, so the colors aren´t as bright and loud as you might see on another show. Still, it looks great.

AUDIO:
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. The dialogue comes in loud and clear and the hits on the football field can be felt right in your living rooms.

EXTRAS:
Behind the Lights: Creating the First Season of Friday Night Lights can be found on disc 1 and runs a little over twenty two minutes. It is an extensive behind-the-scenes look at the production of the show from conception to the filming of the season finale. We get a glimpse of script readings, production meetings, and shooting while the cast and crew are interviewed about the issues they hope to deal with on the show.

You can also find a wealth of deleted scenes for almost every episode throughout the set. Unlike most deleted material, there are excised scenes that remain relevant and help flesh out plot points that are touched upon in later episodes.

This is good stuff, but the absence of any commentary tracks or more in-depth interviews is slightly disappointing.

FILM VALUE:
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed "Friday Night Lights." Those of you who might be turned off by a show about football, should be relieved. As the producers state, the show isn´t about football, it´s about life. Football is simply the glue which holds "Friday Night Light" together. It is the element in which a group of disparate people who might never have anything to do with each other are brought together. The element of sports and competition will please male viewers, while the soap opera style storylines and interweaving relationships will keep female audiences enraptured. "Friday Night Lights" has received rave reviews and numerous nominations during awards season. The studio is confident enough in the show that they are offering consumers a money back guarantee. That´s right, if "Friday Night Lights" doesn´t hook you in, you can get a full refund. You would be hard pressed to pass up on a deal like that, but I doubt Universal will be dishing out too many checks. "Friday Night Lights" is compelling drama.
