A television show like "I Love Lucy" really does not need an introduction. Who doesn´t know about the redhead with the famous plea, "Ricky, why can´t I be in the show?", and who isn´t familiar with Ricky´s exasperated "Ai-yi-yi!"? Ever since 1951, the Ricardos have been a staple of American television, and the show is one of the few genuine gems of the medium.

Actually, instead of saying "the Ricardos", I should say "the Arnazes". Real-life couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz teamed up for a comedic act that showcased their respective talents. Ball, with her distinctive quack-like voice, often went for broad laughs. Arnaz used his background as a musician to provide song-and-dance numbers while playing his wife´s straight-man. (He manages to get a few yuks of his own, of course.) Looking back, what amazes me now is that no one seemed to notice or to call attention to Arnaz´s Hispanic origins--even the show´s storylines treated his ancestry as if it were no big deal, a rather unexpected trait given the times (the 1950s).

Season 3 was more of the same--which isn´t a bad thing considering how funny Seasons 1 and 2 were. The back-of-the-box synopsis lists the year´s best moments, from Lucy and Ethel catfighting to Lucy falling into a giant starch vat, from Ricky and Fred teaching Lucy and Ethel incorrect golf rules and techniques to the women making fools of themselves appearing in a commercial. "I Love Lucy" combined both verbal and physical humor successfully, so there´s rarely a dull moment.

Video:
The black-and-white episodes appear on DVD with a 1.33:1 (full-frame on 4:3 monitors) ratio. For the most part, the show looks very good, even when compared to recent television offerings. Clean, clear, and mostly free of compression artifacts, I noticed only minor problems with occasional video lines and brightness levels (either too bright or too dark).
