Just in time for the holidays, FUNimation brings us "My Santa," a ridiculous, yet disarmingly cute, Christmas story from Ken Akamatsu, the creator of "Negima!" and "Love Hina." This is a 2-episode direct-to-video special release, and is quite unusual due to its Christmas theme. You don't find that many anime Christmas specials out there. This one manages to combine typical anime elements-- sullen teenage heroes, perky cute girls, and magical transformations, with a heartfelt message about the meaning of the season.

Santa is a depressed high school student wallowing in self-pity while sitting alone downtown one Christmas Eve. You see, he has a lot to be sad about. Christmas Eve is his birthday, his parents saddled him with the name "Santa," and once again he is by himself with no one to celebrate with. Santa is not an extremely unusual Japanese name, however the name combined with the December 24th birthday is too much. Santa's gloomy evening is about to change when he encounters Mai, his own personal "Santa Claus" whose goal is to cheer him up and make him a believer again.

In this story, "Santa Claus" is more of a rank or job title than a specific person. There is a Santa Claus world, and an academy where students go and train to become a Santa Claus. Then, on Christmas Eve, they all go out and deliver presents to their assigned sectors. The idea of thousands of Santa Clauses covering the globe actually makes a strange sort of sense. The problem of how one person can deliver so many presents so quickly is solved. It's NOT just one person!

Mai is still a Santa-in-Training, and she is determined to bring Santa some holiday cheer. Her methods are odd, and Santa is a very stubborn guy. He has a lot of built-up angst over the holiday season, and Mai has a tough battle in store. Fortunately, she is equally stubborn. Can Mai and her reindeer Pedro convince Santa that the Christmas spirit really exists, and make him a believer in Santa Claus again?

The story of "My Santa" is fairly simple. It's a nice romantic comedy with a dash of naughty thrown in for good measure. While I am not sure if we really NEED to see Mai's panties, I am sure some viewers will appreciate them. Only in Japan can Santa Claus be a cute teen-aged girl with a plush reindeer and a magical boob-enhancing transformation sequence.

However, it is a pleasant surprise to see them mention the actual reason for Christmas amidst all the silly cute transforming girls and plush reindeer action. In Japan, Christmas tends to be a more secular romantic holiday geared towards lovers. Instead of being with your family, it's a time for being with your boyfriend or girlfriend. However, this series actually focuses on the family gathering angle and even the religious aspect along with the tradition of being with your significant other.
