For every good Eddie Murphy movie, there seems to be a real turd. I´m not terribly surprised that "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps" is nowhere near as entertaining as the first film, but I am surprised that Microsoft Word does not recognize ´turd´ as a legitimate word. Anybody that has seen "The Klumps" knows the truth and they know how well this word applies to the film. Let´s face it. The film´s premise is that Buddy Love and Professor Klump become two separate physical entities and that was enough of a stretch to begin with. But having Buddy Love first have his head appear out of Sherman Klump´s crotch and then jump out of his ass? Screenplay writers Barry W. Blaustein, David Sheffield, Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz need to be spanked. Spanked might not be enough punishment for this mess.

In this sequel, Sherman Klump (Eddie Murphy) is singing at church when his evil alter-ego that resulted from his Slim Fast potion in the first movie jumps out of his rectum cavity and kicks the minister in the face. Buddy Love (Eddie Murphy) is now his own person and he is out to wreak havoc on Sherman´s world. The side effect is that Sherman is having his brain cells die at a rate that increases the longer that Buddy Love lives as a real boy. The grossly fat Sherman falls in love with the uber-sexy DNA specialize Denise Gaines (Janet Jackson). Denise is the kind of girl that would have us red-blooded males want to see in a Super Bowl halftime show, but in this film, she is the love interest of a big nerdy fat man. If having Buddy jump from Sherman´s butt and the unlikely love interest in the first film wasn´t enough, we now have Denise loving Sherman. When will it stop?

It won´t stop when a hamster becomes supersized and anally rapes Sherman´s supervisor, Dean Richmond (Larry Miller). We now have an alter ego taking up a fleshy appearance, a sexual goddess loving the most unlikely man and a giant Dean loving hamster. I´m now wondering if the word ´Dean´ should have been used in that last sentence. Oh well. The movie trudges along, Eddie Murphy portrays a number of people and there are cameos from the crew aplenty. Buddy Love is defeated and Sherman sips his DNA back into his large cranium from a water fountain. Sherman and Denise live together happily ever after until Denise´s breast pops out on national television. The best part of the film ending is that I won´t have to watch the movie again.

I loved the first film. Many people did not, but I found Murphy´s multiple roles to be funny and the concept was done very nicely. They double dipped into that concept and released this putrid follow-up that tarnishes the original film. Eddie Murphy is a very funny man and the film does have a few entertaining moments as Murphy brings life to the various characters, but most of "The Klumps" is just nasty. The humor, the story and Klump´s fat rolls are just nasty. I wanted to love "The Klumps" on the same level as I did the first film. However, this is just a poor reworking of the first film and lacks the originality or warmth of "The Nutty Professor." With all of the product placements and cheap recycled jokes, this felt like a simple cash cow for the filmmakers and somebody should have just written them a check and not forced this product upon the public.

Video:

"The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps" is a decent looking HD-DVD title. The 1.85:1 transfer is mastered with the VC-1 code and contains strong coloring and rich details. Red lobsters, green ferns and white hamsters are all nicely rendered and quite vivid in their coloring. Fleshtones throughout the film are strong, even when heavy makeup is used to disguise Mr. Murphy. This isn´t the most detailed HD-DVD title you will find, but it is an above average catalog title from Universal. Clothing textures and facial imperfections are easy to spot. Another area where this disc shines is the near perfect nature of the source materials. Aside from a few moments of film grain and maybe one or two white specks of dirt, there is nothing wrong with the film master used to create this HD-DVD title. The film certainly looks better than it is.

Sound:

There is an English Dolby 5.1 TrueHD soundtrack on this HD-DVD title. Why? The countless far superior and better sounding films that have been released and not blessed with this technology just baffles me. Universal is giving Buddy Love the love and not their far better titles? I can understand "Hot Fuzz" not having the room, but I cannot figure out why this movie is being treated so wonderfully. An English Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 mix is also included. Sadly, the film does not contain any great moments that can utilize the TrueHD mix. There isn´t a lot of music and aside from one or two club scenes, and maybe one ´action´ sequence with Buddy Love, there isn´t a lot of information to get excited over. The TrueHD mix is technically sound and the film is both clean and vibrant with what little sound information is provided. I have no complaints with the soundtrack, but I just cannot fathom why this title is provided with the desired TrueHD technology and more deserving films are left behind.
