Video:

"South Park: Imaginationland" looks about as good as any other release of the show on DVD. It is mastered in simple full frame and is colorful and relatively detailed. I found the picture to not be as stable as some of the finer animated films and series releases out there and the "South Park" DVDs don´t seem to upscale too nicely. Coloring is strong and the hues are about as sharp as you can find. Blacks are strong and whites are strong. For something created by hand-drawn animation and having the flair of cardboard cutouts, "South Park: Imaginationland" isn´t intended to be all that visually impressive and given the fact that the DVD is technically sufficient, it is hard to complain.

Audio:

The DVD release of these episodes contains an English Dolby Digital 5.1 mix that is slightly superior to a stereo-only release. However, the release doesn´t move too far beyond the front three channels. Dialogue is nicely anchored into the center channel and the familiar Primus theme pounds the bass and bleeds nicely to the rear surrounds. A few ambient effects can also be heard in the rears and the subwoofer channel comes to life a few times. Dialogue is clear and clean and I understood Kenny to a far clearer degree than any time previously in the annals of "South Park."

Extras:

Comedy Central has added a little extra value to the release of "South Park: Imaginationland." Two episodes that feature important evil critters are contained on the release. The Episode 814: Woodland Critter Christmas explains the backstory behind the arse-raping furry and falsely presumed lovable creatures that are the sheer definition of evil. Episode 1006: Manbearpig explains why Al Gore has such a hard-on for the Manbearpig. A Commentary by Matt and Trey runs the length of the film and is funny to listen to. You can gain a little education from listening to the duo behind the show. Finishing off the supplements is a few Storyboards. The supplements are a nice addition.

Closing Comments:

"South Park: Imaginationland" finds Matt Stone and Trey Parker combining their three-part tale of the Pentagon intending to nuke our imagination and Cartman trying to get his dry balls wet into an ´Unrated Director´s Cut" with plenty of language and off-colored jokes. I enjoy "South Park" and found this to be a hoot and loved freezing the frame to recognize all of the familiar imaginary creatures contained in the 65 minute film. It isn´t nearly as entertaining as the real "South Park" movie, but it is a nice little DVD purchase for fans of the show. The DVD shows off an average looking picture and decent sound with two bonus episodes and a commentary. If you absolutely love "South Park," then "Imaginationland" is probably worth checking out.
