It's the way that this series doesn't quite take itself completely seriously that endears it to me.

Suspense, horror, and magic make a winning combination in this action-packed release from ADV. "Tokyo Majin" is another teenagers-fighting-monsters" type of series, but with enough amusing bits of whimsy thrown in to relieve all the tension and elevate it a step above the average. Volume 1 dives right into the middle of the action from the very first episode.
The scene is modern Tokyo. The situation is murder. Or, rather, multiple murders. Someone or something has been killing random people, draining them of all the water in their bodies. The undead walk the streets, and they appear to be under the control of a greater evil force. The police are baffled, and the citizens are afraid. What exactly is causing all this unnatural activity? This is a dirtier, more dangerous Tokyo, and the deaths are just making an already unstable place to live in even worse. The number of unexplainable, horrific events are increasing. Can anyone stand against the demonic forces?
Of course! Five students have come together to fight this evil menace that stalks the city. However, these teens aren't your average kids. Right from the first battle, they all display unusually strong fighting skills and amazing supernatural powers. Each has their own specialty, skill, and role within the team. Heck, all these five need are color-coded suits, and they would be like a Power Ranger squad.
There is no obvious single leader. Instead, the focus is on two of the guys in the team. The first is Kyouichi, a macho hothead with a wooden sword and thirst for laying the smack down on demons. He shares the spotlight with Tatsuma, a mysterious transfer student who is a powerful but quiet fighter. He is more sensitive to what is going on around them than Kyouichi. Rounding out the males in the team is Yuuya, a huge, tough athlete. This muscle-bound behemoth is the brawn in the group. Completing the team are two females. The first is Komaki, a fierce tomboy with excellent archery skills. Like Kyouichi, she is a bit of a hothead and is not afraid to charge in to protect the others. She is especially protective of the final member of the team, Aoi Misato. Aoi is pampered and wealthy, but very sensitive and stronger than she appears. She is the heart of the team, and has strong defensive powers. Together, these five fight to stop the death and destruction of Tokyo and solve the mystery of the source all the unrest.
"Tokyo Majin: Volume 1" contains the first 5 episodes of this 14 episode series. That is a good chunk of the show, and a lot happens here. While episode 1 dumps us right into the thick of the demon-hunting action, episode 2 takes a step back and explores how the demon threat began and how our team of heroes formed. Each episode is a balance between dealing with the "monster of the episode" and the main plot thread. Subsequent episodes reveal more of the inner dynamic of the group. Their relationship with each other grows and changes as the episodes go by. Even though their goal is the same– to protect the citizens of Tokyo from the supernatural threat- there are conflicts within the team that must be overcome before they can truly become an efficient and powerful force against the darkness.
