Upright Citizens Brigade: ASSSSCAT!

DVD/APPROX. 120 MINS./2007/US NR
Kate Walsh just stood there like a deer caught in the headlights blurting out story fragments amidst a meteor shower of "ums" and "uhs" that would cause even a politician to doze off.

The audience didn't help matters, either. I don't know if they already had a few drinks and were feeling giddy from the booze or if they were just paid off by the production, but these hyenas laughed at every single comment that came from the comedians' lips. I'm sorry, but it reminded me of the canned laughter tracks used on older television sitcoms, where one of the stars comes in and says something generic like "hi" and the whole place erupts in a hearty guffaw.

Video:
The video for "ASSSSCAT" is presented in a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1. I noticed a fair amount of grain and one of the multiple cameras that were used to film the show was blurry and created sort of a choppy, pixelated outline around the comedians giving the impression of watching the performers through the mesh of a screen door.

Audio:
There are two audio options on the disc, Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0. I'd say that the sound was about average for a DVD release. I could clearly hear everything the comedians were saying and sometimes laughter from the audience came out from different speakers, but it was still pretty basic and nothing to write home about.

Extras:
"Upright Citizens Brigade Interview" is about sixteen minutes sitting down with the four members of the Upright Citizens Brigade to discuss the history of the group. They talk about when they formed the troupe back in 1996, how they got the name for "ASSSSCAT," and more. It was difficult to differentiate exactly what was factual and what was meant to be a joke, though.

"Monologous Interruptus" is approximately four minutes. Horatio Sanz has a little fun goofing off in the background that interrupts one of the monologist's stories on two separate occasions. I guess it was one of those situations that you had to be there to get the whole joke because I didn't see what was so hilarious about it.

"We Love Our Audience" roughly runs for three and a half minutes with the comedians taking jabs at a few members of the audience. I think it's kind of ironic, not to mention sad, how the shortest clip ended up being the funniest part of the entire disc.

There's also a "Bonus Round" included featuring various monologists such as Will Arnett, Ed Helms, Jen Kirkman, and Paul F. Tomkins followed by shorter sketches. In a nutshell, it's primarily a "best of" compilation that runs about half an hour.

"The ASSSSCAT Theme" is just a screen with a creepy looking cat face and a hard rock track with the word "ASSSSCAT" being shouted over and over. Someone must have stayed up all night racking their brain to come up with those lyrics. It's totally an unlistenable track that becomes irritating after only a few seconds so why even bother putting it here?

The last extra is a "Commentary by Upright Citizens Brigade" which is almost a mockery of real commentaries. There is some explanation on the format and the best ways to perform improv comedy sketches, but most of it is trivial with a few mild jokes thrown in for good measure.

The Final Cut:
I consider myself pretty open-minded when it comes to comedy, but I think the main problem with "ASSSSCAT" is the complete lack of any organizational structure. Too much of the show is a free-for-all, and the haphazardly assembled sketches mostly missed their mark by a mile.
